According to the American Society of Addiction Medicine, “Addiction is a treatable, chronic medical disease involving complex interactions among brain circuits, genetics, the environment, and an individual’s life experiences.”

“It’s important for us to recognize addiction can feel really scary, like life is out of control,” explains Dr. Narissa Etwaroo, addiction psychiatrist at Rogers’ Tampa clinic. “A lack of education regarding the reality of today’s substance use is fueling stigma … and talking about experiences with those who have experienced addiction or those who haven’t can be one of the most powerful ways to break down stigma.”

Dr. Etwaroo and Dr. Sean LeNoue, associate medical director for Rogers’ Regional Division, sat down for a live Q&A on the importance of understanding addiction symptoms, treatment, and stigma surrounding the disorder.

“Almost everyone has a close family member, a friend, or colleague who may have been or is currently struggling with addiction,” says Dr. LeNoue, “The reality is that when individuals struggle with addiction, it really impacts communities.”
