Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation

TMS now available in West Allis, Wisconsin

When antidepressant medications are not enough to treat major depressive disorder (MDD), Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) may be the right option for you. Offered for adults ages 18 and over, TMS is offered at our West Allis, Wisconsin location as an outpatient treatment.

A safe, scientifically supported option

TMS is an FDA-approved treatment technique for those struggling with major depressive disorder (MDD). A machine uses targeted magnetic pulses to stimulate the prefrontal cortex region of the brain, which is underactive in patients suffering from depression. More moderate than other options, there is lower risk of side effects from using TMS than with electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) and drug therapy.

At Rogers, your therapy will be delivered by a trained TMS technician, who will keep you informed throughout each session. A typical treatment plan involves sessions that take under 20 minutes, five days a week for four to six weeks, totaling to about 30 sessions. The number of sessions is dependent on response to treatment and other factors.

Research has shown that approximately 1 in 2 patients will experience a significant reduction in depressive symptoms after using TMS, and 1 in 3 individuals will reach complete remission from major depressive disorder (MDD).

Treatment requirements

Various measures are used to determine if TMS is the best option for you. Ultimately, the decision will be made by you and our treatment team, but in general, to qualify for TMS therapy, one must:

  • Be 18 years old or older
  • Have a diagnosis of major depressive disorder (MDD)
  • Show no response to prior antidepressant medications

You do not need to be a current patient of Rogers to enroll in our TMS outpatient treatment.
