According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, depression is one of the most common health conditions in the US, affecting more than 17 million adults, with higher rates among 18 to 25-year-olds.

Rogers' regional executive director of clinical services, Rachel Leonard, PhD, says depression is much different than a case of the blues.

“All of us experience normal sadness,” says Dr. Leonard. “Depression is more severe and persistent, leading to impairment in functioning and significant distress. It’s a serious, diagnosable disorder that requires and benefits from intervention.”

Symptoms of depression can vary from person to person, and from adults to children, which can make it difficult to recognize.

“Among kids and teens, we typically see an increase in irritability and anger, where they might get easily bothered by small things,’ says Sim Yin Tan, PhD, clinical supervisor at Rogers’  Tampa clinic. “Younger kids may show more clinginess, frequent crying, or temper tantrums.”

Dr. Leonard and Dr. Tan sat down for a live Q&A about signs and symptoms of depression, and how evidence-based treatment can help.
