A CDC report on teen depression is troubling. Almost 3 in 5 teen girls in the U.S. feel persistently sad or hopeless, which is nearly a 60% increase and the highest level reported over the past decade.
Teen depression risk factors
Rogers’ Dr. Peggy Scallon says many factors have contributed to the alarming rise in depression.
"There's no doubt that social media, increased screen use, and COVID-19 are to blame," says Peggy Scallon, MD, DFAPA, DFAACAP, psychiatrist, medical director, Focus Depression Recovery Adolescent Residential Care. "Kids are very sensitive to trends in our culture. They feel the stress and anxiety around them.”
