Depression is more than a case of the blues. When a sad mood lasts for an extended period of time and interferes with a person’s day-to-day functioning, it could be a sign of clinical depression.

Different factors can cause depression, including:

  • Experiencing traumatic or stressful events, such as physical or sexual abuse, the death of a loved one, or financial problems
  • Going through a major life change‚ even if it was planned
  • Anxiety
  • Using alcohol or drugs
  • Having a medical problem

Steve started to experience anxiety and depression following a medical procedure. He stopped doing the things he enjoyed, including playing with his son.

“Life lost all color,” says Steve.

Following a neighbor’s advice, Steve sought intensive outpatient treatment at Rogers.

“We went right to work on what do I want to do tomorrow? What’s coming up next week or next month and how can I engage in those things?” he says.
