Why is depression more common in girls?

In early 2023, the CDC released a report saying showing dramatic rates of depression and anxiety in teens, especially among females.

“Girls have always had a higher rate of depression compared to boys,” says Peggy Scallon, MD, DFAPA, DFAACAP, psychiatrist, medical director, Focus Depression Recovery Adolescent Residential Care at Rogers Behavioral Health.
