Rare Genetic Disease Research at Rogers Behavioral Health

For people with rare genetic diseases, the average wait for a diagnosis after symptoms begin is around nine years. Dr. Sheldon Garrison, a research scientist at Rogers Research Center, is working to shorten that time.

More than 2 percent of people who come to Rogers for treatment have a rare genetic disease that may be driving their mental health symptoms. “It’s important that we are all in to identify these conditions in the people we see”, says Garrison.

That effort focuses on classifying more than 100 rare genetic conditions that may be linked to mental health symptoms, and screening genetic samples from the Rogers Biobank to better understand those connections.
