The teenage years can be challenging. Those who struggle with emotion dysregulation lack the skills to experience and navigate their feelings in healthy ways, which oftentimes leads to self-harm.

“If you’re not regulated it’s hard to connect or build safe relationships with people,” says Dr. Erik Ulland, medical director, Nashotah Center for DBT at Rogers Behavioral Health in Oconomowoc. “We work on interpersonal effectiveness skills to help prevent rejection or conflict, which often leads people to feel intense emotions.”
