When someone is experiencing OCD symptoms like the distress of unwanted and intrusive thoughts and compulsive behaviors associated with OCD, it’s understandable that loved ones want to ease their anxiety.
Accommodation can look like helping a person with OCD complete rituals, like hand washing or checking whether doors are locked. Even though it’s well-intentioned and done with love, this kind of help can actually allow OCD to take a stronger hold, not just on the person, but on the entire family.
“OCD can wrap an entire family around its finger,” explains Martin E. Franklin, PhD, executive clinical director of OCD and Anxiety Services at Rogers Behavioral Health. “Accommodation is when a family takes up the OCD’s business and OCD is telling the family members what they have to do.”
