Tips for Managing Seasonal Affective Disorder

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that happens when there is less natural sunlight and time spent outdoors.

Heather Jones, PhD, Vice President of Clinical Services at Rogers Behavioral Health, says it’s common for us to experience mood changes this time of year. Still, there are signs we should take note of. “When our mood and the symptoms that we’re experiencing have an impact on our life, that’s when we need to start paying more attention.”

Symptoms can be sleeping too much, having a hard time sleeping, not wanting to get out of bed, or avoiding things you enjoy.

But there is good news. There are ways to combat SAD, like exercising, using light therapy, and spending time outside. Even if the weather is chilly, daylight is essential. And with the holidays upon us, maintaining your regular schedule is imperative to preserving your mood.
