When someone is misusing substances, such as alcohol or prescription drugs, they’re often navigating mental health challenges, too. One survey says 35% of U.S. adults 18 and over who experience mental health challenges, such as anxiety or depression, also struggle with a substance use disorder.
This combination is commonly referred to as a co-occurring disorder. When mental health conditions and substance use occur simultaneously, one often makes the other worse. For example, a person may turn to substances to cope with their anxiety, leading to a cycle of self-medicating and worsening mental health.
At Rogers, we know it’s important to treat both at the same time.
“If someone is struggling with substance use because they have PTSD, we’re going to individualize and shift treatment to address both things with the same treatment team,” says Laura John, executive clinical director, Mental Health and Addiction Recovery.
