Emotional struggles and eating disorders

Physical signs of an eating disorder can be easier to spot, yet the emotional struggles, though less visible, are equally important. “Shame, disgust, and guilt often accompany an eating disorder,” says Dr. Nicole Stettler, PhD, psychologist, executive clinical director of Eating Disorder Services at Rogers Behavioral Health. “There’s also a lot of fear, anxiety, and worry related to eating, exercise, and a person’s appearance.” Additionally, Dr. Stettler shares how eating disorders make life small for those who are suffering. “It robs people of their families, friends, interests, and values,” she explains.
