As cyberattacks on healthcare providers continue to rise, Rogers is proactively strengthening its defenses against evolving threats.
“The top healthcare systems have suffered data breaches due to software vulnerabilities or human error,” says Steve Schofner, QTE, CISSP, CASP, CHFI, CEH, CCSFP, executive director of Cybersecurity. “At Rogers, we’re not just reacting. We’re adopting a multifaceted approach that involves every aspect of our operations. This approach is designed to create a more resilient healthcare ecosystem that protects sensitive patient information while upholding the highest standards of data privacy and compliance.”
Steve is leading the charge to secure Rogers from cyberattacks and enhance data security across the organization.
Cybersecurity strategy
Rogers’ comprehensive cybersecurity strategy includes:
- Investing in advanced threat detection technologies
- Creating and developing a dedicated cybersecurity team
- Implementing a zero-trust IT architecture
“My goal is to stay attuned to potential threats,” Steve explains. “According to recent reports, the number of exposed or stolen healthcare records has increased significantly in recent years. Protecting patient data is paramount to maintaining trust and ensuring compliance with stringent regulations, such as HIPAA.”
Key security measures
To address these challenges, Rogers has implemented several key security measures:
- Multi-factor authentication
- Endpoint protection
- Email security
- Leveraging artificial intelligence tools
- Increasing staff awareness
- Developing additional protections to secure patient data
Steve joined Rogers in May 2022 and brings decades of experience leading cybersecurity and risk management efforts, including 20 years at Ohio State University. He emphasizes the importance of collaboration in managing cybersecurity risks, ensuring that everyone’s input is valued and considered in the process.
“It’s been so much fun working and learning from my colleagues in other departments,” he shares. “I’ve enjoyed collaborating with and meeting different stakeholders to gain a deeper understanding of our risks and our strategic approach to managing them.”
By implementing comprehensive security measures and fostering a culture of cybersecurity awareness, Rogers aims to stay ahead of potential threats and safeguard sensitive patient information in an increasingly complex digital landscape.
