Life-changing experiences stay with us forever. Ten years after discharge, a former Nashotah patient reached out to thank the team for saving her life.
“I was one of the first to have the privilege of the experiencing the Nashotah program,” the patient wrote. “I am reaching out to thank Dr. Ulland and his team for saving my life. I have wanted to write letters for many years, but it still hurts to return to that time. It is so important to me that it is known Nashotah changed my soul forever. I remember everyone, the lessons, and memories, which I will carry forever. I am thankful.”
~ Madisyn, former Nashotah patient
Dr. Erik Ulland, MD, medical director, Nashotah Center for DBT Adolescent Residential Care and DBT services, says the message was a pleasant surprise, arriving at just the right time.
“I was thinking about Madisyn earlier in the week, which feels like a wild coincidence,” Dr. Ulland says “It is quite reinforcing to hear from Madisyn because Nashotah was specifically designed to build resilience in emotionally sensitive individuals. Her message stands as a reminder to staff that the daily work we do in residential reduces anxiety and depression and can be far more meaningful. We have the time, space and people to effectively coach skills so clients can build their life worth living. We can lose sight of this privilege while ‘doing the work.’”
