‘I am thriving’: Former San Diego patient shares how treatment team helped her succeed

Rebecca says her battle with severe depression and anxiety brought her to Rogers in San Diego. Although she says she was skeptical about whether treatment would work, she shares how she found the help she so desperately needed.

“I cannot say enough good things about my time at the San Diego location. Honestly, I didn’t have high expectations as I’ve been to treatment centers in the past.

For PHP, I was in the PBH track and the main focus was my depression. Dani and Shyna were patient with me and pushed me just enough outside my comfort zone. I have always been more on the shy side, but with time, I just felt comfortable with them and I really started putting in the work.

Following PBH PHP, I transitioned into the OCD and Anxiety IOP. This part was a game changer for me. In the past, most providers did not take my anxiety seriously and I was never able to address it before. Doing all the exposures and finding what my core fears were changed everything for me. For the first time, I was able to do things I never thought I would ever achieve. Sommer was amazing She helped me so much and continued to challenge me daily. I honestly am doing the best I have ever done following treatment. I have confidence for the first time and I am able to do things by myself without crippling anxiety.

I honestly just want to thank Shyna, Dani, and Sommer for basically saving my life. Before treatment, I was severely depressed, suicidal, and hopeless, but by the end of treatment and currently, I am thriving and wanting to push myself to continue growing as a person.” ~ Rebecca

Members of Rebecca’s treatment team say receiving the update is rewarding and reinforces their commitment to help people find their path to recovery from mental health challenges.

“Reading this brings me a deep sense of fulfillment and reminds me why I do this work. I recall when she first came in, struggling with severe depression and anxiety, feeling hopeless and unsure about treatment. Over time, with patience and trust, Rebecca began to open up and face her fears. The progress she made was incredible, especially in addressing her core anxieties through exposure and response therapy, something she had never been able to do before. I saw her transform from someone paralyzed by fear to someone filled with confidence and determination.

This experience highlighted the power of challenging someone gently but firmly outside their comfort zone, and the importance of a tailored approach to treatment. Knowing that she’s been thriving for months after treatment is deeply rewarding. This submission encourages me to continue challenging myself as a clinician and to keep offering my patients the support they need to grow. It reinforces my belief in the lasting impact of mental health care and motivates me to keep pushing forward in helping others on their own healing journeys.”

“I had the opportunity to work with Becca, as her therapist – in both PBH PHP and OCD and Anxiety IOP. Upon reading her submission, I could not help but smile. I feel very happy for Becca. It’s wonderful that she is able to highlight the growth she has accomplished and has been able to maintain. I also feel proud of her as she continues to put herself out there and share her experiences. I was fortunate enough to see Becca’s transformation throughout her time in PHP, as well as when she transitioned to IOP to continue tackling her anxiety. From her beautiful purple hair, stylishly matching her outfits to her water bottles, to her amazing puzzle skills, and her quick wit and humor, you cannot miss her wherever she goes.

Even on more difficult days, she continued to appropriately push herself to remain open, communicative, and not only trust her team(s), but trust herself as well. She has successfully faced numerous obstacles, pushed herself therapeutically, and has been able to make coping effectively her go to. Her team members and I were there with Becca every step of the way, although she is the one who put in the time and effort into making lasting changes. Becca was able to take her life back and she owes that credit to herself. I enjoyed working with her tremendously and know she will continue to live the life she deserves. Becca’s submission encourages me to continue to engage in the meaningful and impactful work we do. The journey may be challenging for individuals, although I aim to continue to show them it is possible to make lasting changes. It may be difficult, a lot of hard work, although it is worth it.”

“Receiving this update from Becca means the world to me. As a person who builds strong clinical rapport and care for those I support, it is always so difficult to say goodbye and hope that the work we do with them continues to positively impact them moving forward. What we ask our patients to do is extremely challenging, through facing deeply ingrained fears and beliefs they have about themselves. Hearing that Becca has used this insight to continue to challenge herself, her OCD, and anxiety in order to know herself more and experience life more fully makes everything we do daily worth it. When I met Becca, I saw a person who did not yet know that everything she needed was already within herself. For those with OCD, anxiety, and depression, what stands out to me is that these have been the people in my life who have the most care, love, and support for others but are unable to give that to themselves.

Working with Becca was incredibly rewarding. The answer to expanding her outside world was to show up exactly as she is and shift the inner critical, anxious voices in her head to ones of validation, encouragement, acceptance, and self-compassion. Becca was a joy to work with, and she is the embodiment of ‘feel the fear and do it anyway.’ What Becca really showed me was that facing our fears and feeling our feelings doesn’t mean our fears can’t happen. What it means is that if they do happen, it does not define or have to shrink us, and that no matter how much you have struggled, or if treatments in the past have not been effective, you can continue to open yourself up and find the support that you deserve, even when it feels scary.

Her submission encourages me to continue to compassionately challenge my patients and provide them with care that can extend beyond their time in treatment. And as always, to show up in my own life in the way I encourage my patients to with their incredible vulnerability and bravery.”
