Next SOAR program in Oconomowoc May 17
One of two Strength Over Addiction Recovery (SOAR) programs planned this spring, the Manitowoc workshop in April brought the community together for fun, learning, and support.
As a child of a parent who struggled with addiction herself, therapist Brooke Chochola says she jumped at the opportunity to work at the SOAR event on April 26, calling the experience surreal.
“I was able to watch children, caregivers, and loved ones who struggle with addiction come together in a space where they were able to learn, have fun, connect with one another, and find healing,” Brooke says. “I felt like this event was able to heal my inner child.”
SOAR is designed to support children and adolescents facing the emotional and psychological challenges of having a loved one struggling with substance use. Free of cost, SOAR workshops provide fun activities for children and teens 6 through 15 while they learn about substance use, stigma, and resiliency. They have the opportunity to gain coping skills such as meditation, mindfulness, and yoga. Another workshop is designed for parents, guardians, and caregivers.
Julie Collins, an addictions counselor, says she is grateful she was able to help facilitate and experience Manitowoc’s recent SOAR program.
“Seeing all of the families from different backgrounds come together to support each other left me with such a warm feeling,” Julie says. “It is so imperative for caregivers and children to have that safe space to process emotions regarding how substance use has impacted them. I am so excited to see what the future holds for the SOAR program!”
Another SOAR program is coming soon. In partnership with the Rogers Foundation, the next workshop will take place at the Ladish Center in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin at 34700 Valley Road on Saturday, May 17 from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm. Rogers is also collaborating with Parents Place to offer education courses on positive parenting, which supports raising competent, confident, and resilient children.
It’s another opportunity Julie and Brooke say they are excited to see.
“Our community needs more opportunities like SOAR so that we can continue bridging the gap between stigma and healing for children who have been impacted by addiction,” Brooke says.
To register for the event, a guardian must fill out a form by scanning the QR code in the flyer below, or they can email SOAR@rogersbh.org. If technology is a barrier, the guardian can also call 262-646-1866 to complete the registration.
