A registered nurse in inpatient care at Rogers in Brown Deer, Barbarah was honored at a July 24 award ceremony, which was also broadcast over Teams. During the event, a coworker acknowledged her for the care and compassion she shows for her patients, teams, and peers.

Barbarah was nominated five times during this award cycle. Here are a few excerpts from her nominations.

“For the very first time in my life, at least someone heard my heart crying for help. I immediately connected with her, because she genuinely cared. I will never forget you for saving my life that day. You are the best and my favorite nurse.”

“She was so sweet and kind to me, provided me with everything I need, and went above and beyond when it came to my personal mental health.”

“She made me feel at home and at peace. She’s a beacon of light for patients at Rogers.”

Barbarah’s family was also present during her award ceremony.

This is the sixth time Rogers has given a DAISY award to a deserving nurse. The international recognition program celebrates skillful, compassionate care by nurses who demonstrate acts of kindness and sensitivity, as well as exemplifying empathy and integrity.

Congratulations to all the nominees

During this most recent period, 32 nurses received nominations. That includes our second-place honoree, Dirk Gessler, registered nurse, eating disorder recovery, adult inpatient care, Oconomowoc.

“From my first day, Dirk was welcoming and made me confident I was in great care. The way Dirk was able to listen to my thoughts, feelings, and struggles, and rephrase it back to me, guiding me to get the answers I needed made me feel like I had the answer the whole time, yet needed the extra little push to find it. I will always be thankful for Dirk’s care and never forget the nurse who helped me find my own light while in my darkest hour.”

Coming in third, Amanda DeBoer, registered nurse, eating disorder recovery, child and adolescent inpatient care, Oconomowoc, was recognized for her exceptional care of patients.

“We appreciated her professional, calm demeanor while she carried out her responsibilities as a nurse. She was compassionate, caring, and understanding; we could not have asked for a better response from a caregiver at a moment of crisis. Thank you for taking such remarkable care, going above and beyond in a time of need.”

Nominate a nurse for a future DAISY award

Rogers is among more than 5,000 healthcare organizations and schools of nursing worldwide committed to honoring exemplary nurses through the DAISY Award program.

Nurses are nominated by anyone who experiences or observes extraordinary compassionate care: current and former patients, family members, fellow nurses, physicians, clinicians, and other employees.

Winners are selected throughout the year by an internal committee from various disciplines at Rogers. Employee names, locations, and programs are removed from the nomination. The committee is asked to vote for their top five nominees, and a re-vote is taken, if necessary, to narrow down the top three.

The next round of nominations is open now. Nominations, including a detailed account of why the nurse is deserving of the honor, may be submitted at rogersbh.org/DAISY.
