Rogers’ internship program shows growth as new cohort begins

08/22/24 12:00:pm

As one cohort of interns finishes their year with Rogers and another begins, our internship program is growing – with class numbers the highest they’ve been since the start.

Rogers began the program in 2010 with three interns. Seven new doctoral psychology interns began in August 2024, matching the number of interns who just completed their year-long training with Rogers.

Internship programs are the culminating set of clinical experiences for a doctoral student’s graduate program, serving as a gatekeeper function into the psychology profession. Interns also benefit Rogers, including bringing experience and current knowledge of scientific literature to the team.

Nancy Goranson, PsyD, director of training for the APA-approved Doctoral Psychology Internship program, says it all adds up to improved patient care.

“Rogers has a strong team of psychologists who are dedicated to providing our interns with a high-quality experience,” Dr. Goranson says, adding that we advocate for our interns to give back during their time here. “Our internship places a high value on the importance of giving to and immersing yourself in the community in which you live and work.”

Kristin Miles, PsyD, psychologist, says the interns have built-in trainings and supervision that focus on multiple areas to assure Rogers is guiding doctoral clinicians who will be able to provide solid treatment in the mental health field.

“As full-time employees, our doctoral psychology interns are still a student first and employee second,” says Kristin Miles, PsyD, psychologist. “Their time with us is really focused on continued training toward becoming a psychologist. Because those with a caseload have a small one, they can provide greater assistance to patients and residents who need extra support, as well as to staff who appreciate the consultation on cases.”

Since 2010, 72 interns from across the US and Canada have completed the internship program, with 23 who stayed with Rogers and 12 currently employed in various supervisory positions.
